Carol will teach 20 different improvisational piecing techniques and really free ways of creating designs. Learn to play with color, value, and design without anxiety. We’ll make strip sets, circles, offbeat squares, skinny lines, couching and even add a little fusing. You will be encouraged to experiment with color, value, and design. All construction methods are fast and easy! Tired of that precise cutting and those exacting patterns? Then this is the workshop to free you up, expand your creativity, and allow you to just have fun with some spontaneous sewing.
Have you always admired those pieced circles in Carol’s Gong Series or Nuts & Bolts Series? You can piece them with ease and without even pinning. Create your own very own unique quilt using these techniques to piece circles, and learn to do Carol’s trademark circular quilting to complete the look.
Or do you love the look of those really skinny lines and curves in her Linear Series, but don’t know how to create them? Carol shares the secrets of piecing them, and you can make those practice blocks into your own wall quilt full of those “sensuous lines and curves”! We’ll even use couching to create more sensuous lines in your quilt. You’ll also learn how to finish your quilts with facings instead of bindings.
And lastly, in order to finish your quilts, Carol will also give you a special session on Free Motion quilting including demos and drawings of 16-20 designs that we will practice in class, using various threads appropriate to the designs.
All of these techniques are done with a minimal amount of measuring to free you up and allow you to think outside of the box. Use these basics to gain the confidence to work more freely, improvise, and express your individuality in your quilts.
Sensuous Lines, Curves, & Circles
2-3 Day Workshop
This workshop is a combination of two of Carol’s workshops that feature couched yarns as a main design element. Sensuous Lines & Curves and Arc-i-Textures. Once you learn the technique, you will be able to create BOTH of these quilts easily.
Check Carol’s website (www.caroltaylorquilts.com) to see many quilts Carol has made using these same techniques in her Linear Series and her Arc-i-Texture Series, and then come make your very own versions, using these same techniques.
All Thread, All the Time
3-5 Day Workshop
Free Motion Quilting & Threadpainting
If you have not had a chance to take Carol’s free motion stitching classes, why not take this workshop which combines all 3 of her thread classes. Everyone wants to be able to machine quilt and get things done more quickly! So, on the first day, Carol will teach 12-17 quilting design patterns for you to try and go over many of the techniques in the various books teaching free motion quilting. This is a hands-on class to learn and practice these fast new ways of quilting and embellishing your quilts by machine. Learn to do decorative stitching with those metallic, rayon and thick cotton threads! Learn about what threads are available and where to use them. Machines need only have a straight stitch to do these designs. And even the students who’ve had very little quilting experience are successful using these methods. You’ll be able to give your quilts a unique flavor, style, and sparkle in no time using these methods – and get all of those unfinished tops quilted quickly!
The second and third days, we’ll change the pace and do some bobbin drawing, couching, and make some lacy thread and confetti pieces. Then you’ll be ready to create your own thread covered piece. Have you ever wanted to add more thread to create depth but not had one of those expensive embroidery machines to do it? Carol teaches you to make thread covered pieces like the fish or corals in her Coral Reef quilt by using a free motion zigzag stitch. You will create your own threadpainted pansy, leaf, or flower by using this free motion zigzag method. It’s easy and anyone who can lower their feed dogs can do it. Every design uses only the zigzag stitch. It’s like coloring with crayons, except you use threads, and you’ll learn to make solid areas and to blend the colors to make realistic looking pansies or fish. She’ll show you how to take these pieces and add them to your quilts to make your quilts something very special and unique.
The fourth and fifth days, Carol will introduce and pass out drawings for 65 (yep, sixty five!) different quilting patterns not included with the first day’s patterns. She will show you how to use 32 different “meandering” designs, 28 “filler” designs and 5 border designs. You will receive 16 pages of Carol’s drawings to take home and use as ideas on your own quilts. So, come and try some of these new designs and improving your free motion quilting abilities.
You’ll go home really ready to finish all of those tops you’ve never been excited about quilting before and ready to try to incorporate some Threadpainting techniques in your next quilts!
Circles: Pieced, Fused & Quilted (4-5 days)
Have you always admired those pieced circles? You can do it with ease & even without pinning. Create a small unique quilt of your very own while learning to piece circles & some unusual strip sets, & do Carol’s trademark circular quilting to complete the look.
We will start with piecing simple circles that you cut improvisationally and move on to more complex circles. Then Carol will show how to make and use some unusual strip sets to complete the quilt. All done with a minimal amount of measuring to free you up and allow you to think out of the box. You’ll also learn how to finish your quilts with facings instead of bindings.
You’ll be thrilled with the resulting small quilt, which you can do in many different color schemes & hang in your own home or give as a gift. Check Carol’s website (www.caroltaylorquilts.com) to see how many quilts Carol has made using these same techniques, and then come learn the techniques to make your very own.
