Arc-i-Texture!

This series is based on the theme of circles ("arcs") as a design element super imposed on top of a composition of textured fabrics. Thus the name Arc-i-Texture!

These are all small works ranging from 15" x 15" and 12" x 12" in size. The textured fabrics include velvets, suedes, organzas, brocades, glitzy-shiny fabrics, feathers, and all kinds of other wonderful fabrics I found in the garment district in NYC.

These fabrics make lovely compositions all by themselves, but I discovered that the pieces became more interesting by adding another layer of design by couching multicolored threads and ribbons in a circular design on top of them. The series now consists of 41 small quilts, differentiated here by color and number.

Raindrop Reflections (37 x 37)
The black and white tile floor background shows the splatter of sparkly raindrop reflections of many sizes of metallic, suede, and cotton ribbon floss circles.

Night & Day (14.5 x 74.5)

The value flow from cream to orange to turquoise to brown creates the illusion of going from Day to Night. Embellished with yarn circles and half circles as well as beads.

Sunlit (41 x 57)

This piece uses value to create a flow from light in the middle to dark on the outside in both the base fabrics and the embellishments, reminding the viewer of sunlight and shadows.

Moonglow (35 x 53)

The textured fabrics in this piece include velvets, suedes, organzas, brocades, glitzy-shiny fabrics, and hand dyed and painted cottons. These fabrics make lovely compositions all by themselves, but I discovered that the pieces became more interesting by adding another layer of design by couching multicolored threads and ribbons in a circular design on top of them. Using value as my guide, the yellows and pale blues disperse into the blues, greens and purples, creating the glow of the moon in a deep, rich blue sky background.

Summer Breezes (18 x 19)

This quilt is for the Art in Stitches exhibit at Memorial Art Gallery in Rochester, NY where each artist was invited to use a piece in their permanent collection as inspiration and create a small 18 x 19 piece. My inspiration piece was a stained glass window, which was lit from behind, of a summer scene with water, foliage and a large tree. So, I tried to create that sparkle and glow in my small piece as well.

Arc-i-Textural Blues

For this is a larger version, I created nine 18" Arc-i-Texture pieces like the small works I originally made. Then I combined them into a nine patch formation. The palette came form the wonderful piece of "fabric" composed entirely of feathers that I found in the NYC garment district. The feathers are a wonderful combination of browns, grays and blues, which I combined with about 25 other textured fabrics with similar colorations. The fabrics include sequined pieces, silks, brocades, painted, upholstery and other textured materials.
